Perapera-kun 2.1 Released

Here are the updates for 2.1:

  • Added a checkbox to change to an alternate flag for Chinese in the “Chinese” tab in the add-on’s options dialog
  • Added one click to toggle on/off if only 1 language is installed
  • Added toolbar icons (right click on the toolbar, click ‘customize’ and you can drag them from here to the toolbar)
  • Added a ‘Perapera-kun’ entry to the right-click popup menu, and to the ‘Tools’ menu
  • Fixed issue where all of the Chinese definition wasnt being displayed from the CC-CEDICT
  • Fixed issue where some incorrect meanings were displayed due to some Simplified hanzi having a different meaning in the Traditional character set
  • Tweaked the logo a little bit

I uploaded it to Mozilla today and it usually takes about 2 weeks before it will update everyones automatically so if you don’t want to wait until then, you can get it here:

http://downloads.mozdev.org/peraperakun/Peraperakun2.1.xpi

*Note: Since there were 2 versions existing before I unified Japanese and Chinese in 2.0, if you installed the Chinese version from the addons.mozilla.org site, installing from the above link will cause 2 versions to be installed at once. Simply remove the old one and all will be fine.

  1. Thanks for the update and combining the two plugins into one. I was confused when I saw both the same extension used for different languages. Now I can do both Chinese/Japanese with one again.

  2. Can you add an option that disables the Perakun Tools menu option, the right click option, and the icon at the bottom right corner? I find that all those do is add clutter, when I just use it from the navigation toolbar.

Here is an image of my browser using Firefox 3.6 RC1 and no issues whatsoever at all as far as I can tell. Even enabling it and using it works fine as well just haven’t taken a pic of it but it works. So I don’t see what others are having issues with. Again thanks for the update and I hope you can answer my issue of having the Korean one disabled. Is there a way to add dictionaries to it? I was thinking of a possible Firefox extension that can be possibly installed like the Chinese one since I have both Chinese/Japanese working perfectly.

  4. I’m not sure what others problems are, either, but when I upgraded, my Chinese language option disappeared (leaving only Japanese). I just uninstalled all instances of Perapera-kun, reinstalled them, and it worked fine. Those of you with problems might make sure that you don’t simultaneously have the old 2.0 version AND the new 2.1 version installed. Just uninstall all versions and reinstall them, hopefully it should fix itself.

Also, I made alternate Chinese language flags for anyone to use. The “Stylish” extension is required to use these.

Also, feel free to use these in future versions or Perapera-kun, or not. I don’t mind.

  5. Hello wenjonggal,
If you don’t want your add-ons to update automatically, go to Tools > Options > Advanced and uncheck “Installed Add-ons” under “Automatically check for updates to.”

  6. Wenjonggal,
To be fair to Justin (la mogura), testing is a bitch for programmers and there will always be a bug or two that gets past them. Sometimes they’ll be big (like your case) and sometimes they’ll be small. He does this in his free time and it’s a free plugin after all so perhaps he took your original post as too demanding sounding. As for his attitude, maybe he’s having a bad day, maybe not, but there’s nothing much you can do about that.

From what I can see, you’re using an ancient version of FireFox so try updating that and see what happens. If that doesn’t work, try disabling your other plugins to see if there’s some sort of conflict. If that doesn’t work either, then I’m out of ideas.

    Best of luck.

  7. Hi,
since I downloaded the 2.1 version, only 1/3 of the characters is displayed for the simplified chinese, and… nothing for the traditional…
the 2.0 worked very good though..

I hope there is a way to fix this, because this is a very useful application, and I thank its creator for it !!

    Good luck

  8. Since I updated to 2.1 the “S” key no longer seems to work to save words. This is on Firefox 3.5.3 on Windows XP Home.

  9. Is anyone else finding 2.1 rather buggy? First, it won’t install from the Mozilla web page. Second, the Save function is not working at all: the S key does nothing, although other shortcut keys seem to be working fine. And finally, there is no way to Show/Hide the Word List. I apologize for possibly repeating the obvious here, but I couldn’t find any other posts on dealing with these problems. I’m sure you’re working on fixes, but in the mean time, I’d like to roll back to 2.0. Is there a link? Mozilla will not point me to previous versions.

I feel like I should end in praise of THE add-on that keeps me from even thinking about using any browser other than FF. Despite these minor glitches, the steady trend for PPK has been toward greater functionality, ease of use, and usefulness. Thank you a million times over.

  10. wow its very interesting how my chinese didnt work when i updated but it started working again after firefox updated as well

  11. hi,
just to let you know that automatic update is not working. More so, if you go to extension’s page on AMO:

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3343

and you go and save the xpi (instead of just clicking on it) and check the file in notepad it only says: addon not found in plain text – it’s not a real xpi.

It is probably some issue on AMO side, but you should check it with admins there. Meanwhile, I’ll be updating through link provided in your post.

  12. So how can we downgrade to 2.0? The problem I’m having is that show/hide word list isn’t working and I can’t save words either.

  13. Good job as ever, now the extension works way better than before!

Just a little question though… are you thinking about making a porting of perapera on Chrome? If you are, I (and certainly many other Chrome users) would really appreciate it.

    Keep up the good work!

  14. Hello — first let me say i love the app.

Since the December update, though, i can’t use the “add to wordlist” function. The “S” key copies the definition and word to the clipboard, but where my sidebar used to open up and show the wordlist, now nothing happens.

Is there some file somewhere i should tweak to get the wordlist working aain?

My system is a stock Debian Lenny 64bit, w/Iceweasel. I have the All-in-one sidebar installed, along with quite a few other add-ons.

Any help would be much appreciated.

  15. Thank you for developing Perapera-kun, I love it.

I used the wordlist application with a former Perapera-kun but it doesn’t work with the new version.
When the popup is visible, clicking on the “s” button doesn’t open the wordlist.
I also tried to “show” the wordlist in the menu after clicking on right button on the yellow star, but nothing changed.
Do you have an idea to fix my problem?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  16. I’ve been getting occasional unresponsive script errors from Perapera-kun recently. Here’s the message I got just a minutes ago:

“A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

    Script: chrome://perakun/content/chinese/cdata.js:231″

Other than this it’s been great. Keep up the good work!

  17. Justin,

I’m experiencing some trouble using perapera-kun (Chinese) 2.1 in Firefox (v 3.0.11) on a Linux platform. Specifically, installation and activation seem to work perfectly, but hovering my mouse over a lot of characters does not activate the translation box.

For instance, on the homepage of baidu.com, perapera-kun gives me the translation of ? ? (second block of characters from the left above the search box) but not the translation of ? ? (first block from the left).

However, the add-on works perfectly under Windows 7, which makes me think it’s a Linux-related issue.

Thank you for building this software. I have to say it is extremely helpful and I’m utterly grateful to your efforts.

    Olivier

  18. The Perakun 2.1 version upgrade seems to have broken the word list sidebar. It was working in 2.0.
